Chapter Eighteen

Lance was going to have his Ochinello in a week. He hadn’t exactly been talking to me since the night he came over. That seemed to be okay because dealing with Devin was more than enough drama for me to handle at the present moment.

Each day, Devin and I had a love affair with just the way we looked at each other. We got a few words in. He usually said romantic things when he had a chance to say anything at all. He was a poet in so many ways.

I hadn’t told anyone about Devin. I definitely wouldn’t talk about him to Lance. But I wasn’t sure how to go about telling Bree.

She came over the following Sunday night and just melted for my man. She was so overtly flirting with him that I had to pull her aside and talk to her. I told her I was interested in him and I already had feelings for him, and that I needed her to keep all that information severely under wraps.

She agreed.

Our fondness for one another in secrecy was raised to another level. Devin and I spent the next week sneaking kisses all around the house out of people’s view. We had a no-smack rule when it came to our smooching. We felt that would get us caught.

Finally, on Sunday, everyone left the house again. This time I was unclear on the times when people were getting back. But I didn’t care. I just wanted to be fully alone with Devin.

After the last of my family left, I knew Devin and I were alone. I could hear him being extremely loud in the kitchen. It was not a subtle way of saying, ‘Hey, come out here.’ What he didn’t know was that I was making myself pretty for him. I fixed up my makeup and fluffed my hair out and combed through it.

I decided it was time to leave my room. I walked into the kitchen where I knew Devin was standing. I walked in, ready to give him a giant kiss. However, I discovered it was not Devin in the kitchen. It was Jered. I looked outside, and I could see Devin working on the deck.

Why did Jered come back already?

I was horrified to see him.

“Don’t look so disappointed to see me, sis,” Jered said, correctly guessing what was actually happening.

I went to the refrigerator and pulled out some orange juice to drink.

“Must be nice,” Jered said, drinking some of Devin’s most recent batch. He was referring to the fact that I could eat and drink human food.

“Why did you come back?” I asked, annoyed with him already.

“I am going back out. I just needed to come back and take care of a couple of loose ends.” Then Jered gave me a cold look.

“What does that mean?” I said angrily.

“It means exactly what I said it means,” Jered said, with a glare in his eyes.

“Jered, what did you do and why did you do it?”

“You think you’re sneaky.
